The Green Snake’s Calamity: Twin Serpents and the West Lake’s Doom

The Green Snake's Trial: The Twin Serpents' Call

During the Shaoxing era of the Southern Song, a grudge spanning three hundred years lay hidden in the mist and rain over West Lake.

Seeking true love in the mortal world, Bai Suzhen spent three hundred years cultivating her human form before finally meeting her destined one, the scholar Xu Xian in blue robes. Their first encounter, with a borrowed umbrella on the Broken Bridge and a token of affection in a sachet, should have been the beginning of an immortal romance. Instead, a sudden storm of violence shattered it. A red-scaled snake demon swooped down from the clouds, its shriek tearing open the secrets of their three past lives: the demon was none other than Liu Ruyan, Bai Suzhen's snake sister, whom she had subdued three hundred years ago!

Back then, to survive the lightning tribulation, Bai Suzhen took Liu Ruyan's inner core to nourish her own spirit. But after attaining the Way and ascending, she sealed Liu Ruyan in a snake pit beneath Leifeng Pagoda, locking three hundred years of venomous resentment away with thousand-year-old black iron. Now Liu Ruyan has broken free. Her tail sweeps across the bluestone paving, hatred burning in her eyes: “You stole my destined match. Today, you'll pay for it in blood!”

On one side is the tenderness of childhood sweethearts; on the other, the revenge of a thousand-year-old snake demon. On one side is a steadfast devotion to true love; on the other, the surging tangle of fate. Bai Suzhen must protect Xu Xian, but she must also unravel the knot in Liu Ruyan's heart. Liu Ruyan's forked tongue glimmers an eerie green, yet beneath her furious hisses lies the sob of someone betrayed. What she has always wanted is not destruction, but to be seen and repaid for the three hundred years taken from her.

The waters of West Lake rise and fall, and the shadow of Leifeng Pagoda shifts across the land. When the sharp sword clashes with the serpent's tail, and the sachet breaks apart in the rain, will this calamity brought on by the twin serpents finally settle an old score, or set a new romance spinning through another cycle of reincarnation?

(Note: This story draws on the core of the traditional Legend of the White Snake, retelling the classic from the perspective of the “twin serpents.” It focuses on the struggle between love and fate, adding a complex bond that spans past and present lives.)
