In Lin'an Prefecture during the Southern Song dynasty, a floating corpse sets off a string of murder cases...

Sixteen-year-old Song Ci is already an expert in medicine and forensic examination, despite his youth. He is the son of Lin'an Prefecture's coroner. When a woman's corpse marked with mysterious symbols is discovered in a stream outside the city, his keen eye pierces the false appearance of accidental drowning. He declares it a carefully staged murder.

Twenty-one-year-old Qiu Yingying is the only female constable in Lin'an Prefecture. A superb martial artist, she is wary of officialdom because her father was framed. Assigned to investigate the case, she clashes repeatedly with the eccentric boy who is obsessed with corpses, yet cannot deny his astonishing knack for solving crimes.

A series of symbol-themed murders follows. Each victim is bound in a peculiar manner, with strange runes carved into their back. Through his examinations, Song Ci discovers that the killer is skilled in dissection but has disguised the crimes as Taoist rituals. Meanwhile, Qiu Yingying uncovers a decade-old imperial examination scandal that was covered up, digging through the victims' backgrounds to find the truth.

When their investigation reaches the prefect's secrets, Qiu Yingying is suspended and investigated, while Song Ci receives death threats. Surrounded by danger on all sides, the two have no choice but to support each other. She teaches him self-defense, and he teaches her forensic techniques. When Qiu Yingying is poisoned while protecting Song Ci, the young man risks everything to force out the poison with acupuncture and keeps watch over her all night. At last, their two proud hearts open to each other.

The most dangerous evidence is hidden in the victims' eyes. From the image lingering in the last victim's pupils, Song Ci identifies the real killer. But at that very moment, Qiu Yingying is alone, facing a shadowy figure approaching with a sword...
