Drunken Dreams Beneath Bianjing’s Moon

Wu Xiuqiang was a celebrated master mixologist in a neon-lit metropolis. With a twist of his fingers, he could blend strong spirits and tenderness into flavors that made time stand still. One rainy night, an accident sent him tumbling into the bustling yet ancient city of Bianjing in the Northern Song dynasty, bringing with him a head full of cocktail recipes and bartending skills. Penniless in this unfamiliar era, he found shelter in a small tavern beside the pleasure quarters, only to discover that the wine here was rich but lacked finesse. He blended rock sugar and green plums into “Childhood Sweethearts,” a harmony of sweet and tart, and brewed osmanthus and rice wine into “Moonlit Ballad,” a drink for solitary sipping beneath the moon. His novel creations soon made him famous in Bianjing’s wine scene. Amid the fragrant haze of wine, he met Su Wanqing, the young proprietress of Bianjing’s finest restaurant. Well versed in poetry and books, she was nevertheless constrained by social conventions and determined to challenge the prejudice that women could not run kitchens or brew wine. Wu Xiuqiang not only opened the door to a new world for her, but also brought two hearts that refused to settle for the ordinary to brew a tender love across time, as their cups met. Together, they refined their recipes and fought conservative forces, writing a legend of wine, dreams, and love on the bustling streets of Bianjing.
