A Complete Reading of Wang Yangming's Instructions for Practical Living

The Record of Instructions and Conversations is the central text of the teachings of Wang Yangming, a Ming dynasty thinker and proponent of the School of Mind. Compiled by his disciples from his lectures and correspondence, it is a collection of recorded conversations and a landmark work of Confucian thought. The book focuses on the core of the School of Mind and systematically expounds three central principles, combining philosophical depth with practical guidance.

Its central ideas are "the mind is principle," "the unity of knowledge and action," and "the extension of innate knowledge of the good." It holds that the original mind itself is the heavenly principle and rejects the constraints of external dogma. It emphasizes that knowledge and action cannot be separated: knowledge is the beginning of action, and action is the fulfillment of knowledge. It rejects empty talk about principles and advocates awakening the innate knowledge of the good, using self-reflection to cast off selfish desires and achieve moral awareness.

The work primarily takes the form of question-and-answer discussions and explanations in letters, unpacking the dialectical relationship between mind and principle, and between knowledge and action. It blends the wisdom of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism, breaking through the constraints of traditional Neo-Confucianism. It not only reshaped the course of Confucian thought from the Ming and Qing dynasties onward and profoundly influenced later thinkers, but also offers practical guidance on self-cultivation and how to conduct oneself. It is an essential model for understanding traditional Chinese thought on the mind and Wang Yangming's System of thought, with both scholarly value and spiritual significance.
