The Zhuangzi is a collection of philosophical essays written by Zhuang Zhou, a major Daoist thinker of the Warring States period, and his later followers. Also known as the Scripture of Nanhua, it is often paired with the Laozi as the “Lao-Zhuang” tradition and is a key text of Daoist thought.

The work survives in 33 chapters, divided into Inner Chapters, Outer Chapters, and Miscellaneous Chapters. Stories such as “The Frog in the Well,” “Learning to Walk in Handan,” and “Cook Ding Butchers an Ox” have been passed down through the ages. By weaving abstract philosophy into vivid stories, the work is both literary and thought-provoking.
