A Complete Guide to Plum Blossom Numerology

Plum Blossom Numerology is a divination method derived from the Book of Changes and traditionally associated with the Northern Song scholar Shao Yong. Its name has quite a story behind it. Legend has it that Shao Yong once saw sparrows fighting over a plum blossom branch and casually cast a hexagram, predicting that a woman would be injured while picking flowers. The prediction came true, and the method got its name from the incident. The method’s greatest strength is its flexibility and simplicity. There is no need to pore over complicated texts or prepare special tools. You can cast a hexagram anywhere in daily life: glance at the time, note a direction, hear a sound, or even pick up a fallen leaf, and use it to make a prediction. Its basic principles are straightforward. The “host hexagram” represents you or the subject of your question, while the “guest hexagram” represents outside influences or factors of change. You then consider how the two relate through the Five Elements, such as wood generating fire or fire overcoming metal, to judge what may happen. For example, if you want to know whether something will succeed and the guest hexagram “supports” the host hexagram, things are often likely to go smoothly. If it “overcomes” the host, you may need to be more cautious. Besides predicting good or bad fortune, the method is often used for small, everyday decisions: which route to take when going out, or which style of an item to buy. People in ancient times believed it could help them act in greater harmony with the natural order. Ultimately, it is more like a “tool for observing the world.” Rather than relying on complicated rules, it encourages people to find connections in the details around them, reflecting the ancient wisdom that “all things are interconnected.” Even without a deep understanding of the theories of the Book of Changes, you can appreciate its underlying idea: the patterns of life are often hidden in the everyday details right at hand.
