An Annotated Guide to the Essential Techniques for the Welfare of the People

The Essential Techniques for the Common People is a comprehensive agricultural treatise compiled by Jia Sixie, an agronomist of the Northern Wei. It is the oldest and most complete ancient agricultural text still extant in China, written around the sixth century AD.

In the title, “common people” refers to ordinary folk, while “essential techniques” means the important methods of making a living, highlighting the book’s practical value. The work consists of ten volumes and covers a wide range of subjects: growing grain crops such as wheat, rice, and millet; cultivating vegetables and fruit trees; raising livestock and poultry; fishing and aquaculture; and even food-processing techniques such as brewing wine, making sauces, and pickling vegetables. It also discusses details like pest and disease control, soil improvement, and the use of farming tools.

Jia Sixie wrote the book by collecting knowledge from ordinary people, consulting ancient texts, and drawing on his own experience. It emphasizes that “by following the seasons and making use of the land’s advantages, one can achieve more with less effort,” advocating that agricultural production follow the laws of nature and reflecting a simple ecological outlook.

The book not only summarizes agricultural techniques from the Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties, but also preserves a wealth of ancient farming proverbs and practical knowledge. It had a profound influence on the development of agriculture in later ages and is hailed as “the encyclopedia of ancient Chinese agriculture.” To this day, it remains an important source for the study of ancient agricultural history.
