The 1980s: Spending My Allowance on Shopping, While the Officer Spoils Me Rotten

Su Man transmigrates into a period drama full of hardship.

In the book, she’s the foil to the heroine. The heroine marries an educated youth who’s romantic and writes poetry. Though their life is hard, love makes even plain water feel like a feast. She also has to become a stepmother to his two sons.

In the original story, her husband is never home, and loneliness and frustration eventually drive Su Man to cheat, with a tragic end.

When Su Man wakes up, she sees the huge allowance deposited into her bankbook on time every month, the fridge packed with specially supplied beef, and her two mischievous stepsons, who’ll do anything if you pay them.

So while the heroine next door argues with her mother-in-law over buying a piece of meat, Su Man is eating imported chocolate in a dress from the Friendship Store and ordering her stepsons to massage her legs.

Then one day, her “Yama” husband, said to be cold in both face and heart, comes home. Seeing his plump, well-fed wife and children, he doesn’t get angry. Instead, he works even harder to earn money and get promoted, afraid his wife might run off if she thinks he isn’t giving her enough to spend.
