A Gentle Stream Flows On: The Morning Light Diary

Xia Zhi, a librarian, always sees a man come through the door at five thirty every morning. His name is Jiang Ci. He always wears a khaki trench coat softened by many washes, spreads architectural blueprints at a window seat, and has a faint dusting of pencil graphite on his fingertips. She quietly memorizes his reading habits: every Wednesday, he borrows History of Architecture; he takes two spoonfuls of sugar in his coffee; and when he leaves, he pushes his chair neatly back into place. One stormy night, she finds the sketchbook he left on the table. On the last page is a drawing of the library's colored-glass windows, with the crooked note, "Xia Zhi's hair clip looks like a little moon." When she blushes and hands him a spare umbrella, the sight of his reddening ears makes her heart flutter even more than the thunder outside. Only later does she learn that he deliberately opened a studio across from the library to be near her. The books he borrowed, the sketches he drew, the chance meetings he timed just right: all were part of a tenderness long in the making. Like the monstera he gave her, whose vines quietly crept onto her windowsill in the daily morning light.
