The Unrivaled Statesman: The Rise and Fall of Han Xin

Born into poverty, he nonetheless dreamed of commanding armies and shaping the world.

On the streets of Huaiyin, a street thug held a knife to his throat and forced him to crawl between his legs. As he bent down, his eyes held no humiliation, only a cold analysis of the terrain. Endurance was not cowardice. With the lives of a million people at stake in the future, I must be able to strike a fatal blow!

From a destitute royal descendant begging for food by the river to an obscure doctor carrying a halberd in Xiang Yu’s camp, he endured countless sneers while turning a thousand miles of mountains and rivers into a chessboard in his mind. He abandoned Chu for Han, was appointed general in a grand ceremony, and presented the Strategy for Hanzhong, securing the foundations of the Han dynasty for the next four hundred years with a single speech.

They built plank roads in plain sight and secretly crossed through Chencang, reclaiming the Three Qins as easily as reaching into a bag. They fought with their backs to the river, staking all on a desperate stand, and defeated a superior force to create a military legend. They flooded Long Ju’s forces and laid an ambush on every side, driving the invincible Hegemon-King of Western Chu to take his own life by the Wu River.

His command of the troops seemed divine, his plans flawless. He was hailed as the Immortal of War, and believed his talent was enough to win anything, even a ruler’s trust.

Yet when he commanded an army of three hundred thousand, ruled over the prosperous lands of Qi, and stood at the peak of his life, he did not realize that those whose achievements overshadowed their ruler were in danger, and those whose merit covered the world would go unrewarded. From King of Qi to King of Chu, from having his military tally seized to being placed under house arrest in Chang’an, he walked step by step into the trap of imperial machinations.

Only when Empress Lü’s bamboo sword pierced his chest did he understand: the world could bear his fall from grace, but it could not tolerate his talent.

This is the legend of Han Xin, the great general of his age. Watch as he rises from the deepest mire, using the edge of his sword as a brush and blood as ink to write one of the most brilliant chapters in Chinese military history, while leaving behind an enduring tragedy of talent, loyalty, and fate.
