Emperor Bing's Naval Battle at Yashan: The Song Dynasty Rises Again

In 1279, during the Battle of Yashan, the Song army is routed. Eight-year-old Emperor Zhao Bing is escorted by Grand Tutor Lu Xiufu as they break through with thirty warships and more than a thousand surviving soldiers, escaping the fate of drowning themselves for their country. Their sails point southeast, and the dark tides guide them to Luerhmen in Taiwan. From that moment on, the young emperor who once hid in a minister’s arms begins a bloody campaign to preserve the Zhao clan and restore the Song dynasty.

Upon reaching Taiwan, he tears his imperial robes into common clothes and uses Taizu’s jade pendant to win the trust of the indigenous people. He learns to cultivate Champa rice from an old official and grips the ship’s mast when Yuan patrol boats launch a surprise attack. Establishing himself in the Ryukyu Islands, he builds beacon towers and develops sulfur mines. Overriding objections, he accepts samurai from Kyushu, showing his decisiveness as a ruler for the first time. In the contest for Southeast Asia, he leads a coalition to seize Luzon and control Indonesia. His policy of “no massacres, shared rule” unites the tribes, while the spice trade lays the foundations of an island empire. Leading his forces into the Indochinese Peninsula, he negotiates in person on Bali, uses war elephants to break the turmoil in Burma, and turns the Red River and Mekong plains into granaries for a counteroffensive.

From an eight-year-old escapee to a twenty-year-old ruler in his own right, he pays homage to his late father’s tomb atop the walls of Quanzhou, announces the restoration of the homeland from the Zhenhai Tower in Guangzhou, and defeats Mongol cavalry at Shaoguan through coordinated infantry and artillery. At last, he reaches Dadu, drives back the remnants of the Yuan, and offers sacrifices to Heaven and his ancestors in the palace at Yanjing, restoring the Song dynasty’s name. This is no tale of retreat to a corner of the realm. It is the epic of a young emperor who carries the last embers of Yashan across the seas, subdues Indochina, and restores the Central Plains, writing the story of the Song’s revival over twenty years amid the chaos of the early Yuan dynasty.
