Strange Tales of Reincarnation: A Hundred Trials of Love

Introduction to The Liaozhai Cycle: A Hundred Tribulations of Love:

Chen Yan, a graduate student in history, is drawn into a cycle of reincarnation spanning life and death by an ancestral bronze mirror. Forced to travel through the supernatural worlds of Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio, he becomes classic characters such as Ning Caichen, Qiao Sheng, and Wang Zifu. Yet, in his self-assured attempts to "rewrite" their stories, he repeatedly drives each extraordinary romance toward irreversible ruin: Nie Xiaoqian's soul scatters on Black Mountain, Lian Cheng dies with regrets, and Ying Ning's smile fades into tragedy... Every time his love is misplaced, he pays a punishment that cuts to the bone.

When the bronze mirror lights up again, he returns to the same dreams with tear-filled eyes and all his memories intact. This time, he puts away the arrogance of his "God's-eye view." He learns to listen as Xiaoqian tells him how she was powerless to choose, keeps Ying Ning smiling in the face of worldly condemnation, and bears the burdens of Lian Cheng's family in her stead. From "interfering with the plot" to "empathizing with all things," he gradually pieces together shattered romances amid the barriers of human and ghostly worlds, and the struggle between a creature's true nature and human desire.

Thirty Liaozhai stories, sixty entanglements of life and death. As Ning Caichen, he must believe in Xiaoqian's goodness; as Qiao Sheng, he must understand Lian Cheng's strength; as Zi Chu, he must honor A Bao's pride. When the last bronze mirror reflects the lingering spirit of Pu Songling, Chen Yan finally understands that this cycle was never meant to rewrite the endings. It was meant to teach the world that love is fulfilled not by force, but by seeing what kind of light is hidden in the folds of every heart.
