Reborn Twice: Baoyu Defies Fate and Changes His Destiny

Dream of the Red Chamber: Reborn Twice, Defying Heaven to Change Fate tells the story of Lin Yan, a modern graduate student in history who twice has his soul transported into Jia Baoyu in Dream of the Red Chamber. Amid the upheavals of the Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong reigns, he risks everything to defy fate and change the ending in which the Jia family is destroyed and the people he loves die tragically.

In his first rebirth, at sixteen, he tries to protect the Twelve Beauties of Jinling and a century-old noble clan with nothing but youthful passion. But under Yongzheng's iron-fisted purge of the old aristocracy, he can only watch helplessly as the Rongguo Mansion is confiscated and Daiyu dies in tears of blood. In the end, he perishes in a sea of flames alongside his family.

In his second rebirth, he returns to the day he first meets Daiyu, at the age of ten, carrying the tears and memories of his past life. He sees through the undercurrents of the struggle among the nine princes, the roots of Jiangnan's fiscal deficits, and the cruelty of imperial power games. This time, he reins in his unruly nature and conceals his sharp edge. In secret, he severs the Jia family's ties to the deposed crown prince, finds a physician to save Daiyu's life, and uses Prince Yi's influence to avert the confiscation of the family estate. He saves Qingwen from being driven out, helps Tanchun marry far away in safety, and uncovers the truth behind Lin Ruhai's death so Daiyu can avenge him. Abandoning empty titles and prestige, he establishes a publishing house and commercial routes, drawing his family away from the whirlpool of power and toward the foundations of ordinary life.

From the fading glow of prosperity in the final years of Kangxi to the surging undercurrents of the mid-Qianlong era, he uses the wisdom of two lifetimes to fight the wheel of fate. At last, between the shattered dream of the Red Chamber and the torrent of Qing history, he wins a sliver of hope for his loved ones and his family, leaving behind a different ending: "Though it lacks the splendor of the Grand View Garden, the Xiaoxiang Lodge still has a future."
