The Han Dynasty Rises Again: Zhuge Kongming's Southern Campaign to Secure the Realm

The defeat at Jieting shakes the foundations of Shu Han’s northern campaigns. With empty granaries and a beleaguered Yizhou, Zhuge Liang spends a sleepless night in his Hanzhong camp reviewing the situation, finally letting go of his fixation on “campaigning north to restore Han.” If battering against the northern front is like throwing an egg at a rock, then why not turn southwest and use the Indochinese Peninsula as a base, taking the unlikely path of “expanding south to build a foundation, then defeating Wu before Wei”?

Overruling his critics, he persuades Wei Yan to hold Hanzhong and implement a system combining farming with military service. He joins forces with Meng Huo to unite the warriors of Nanzhong, turns the Shan leader Aji in Burma into an ally, and exploits tribal rivalries to “sustain war through war.” His first campaign takes Shan and gains war elephants and a hundred thousand shi of grain. He secures northern Thailand and Laos to establish rice-producing granaries, easily takes southern Vietnam to open a trade route through the South China Sea, and even crosses the Naga Hills to ally with the Naga people of India, establishing spice-growing bases and cavalry camps. In doing so, he finally remedies Shu Han’s two greatest weaknesses: its grain shortages and lack of cavalry.

Afterward, he uses the strategy of “allying with Wei to lull Eastern Wu into complacency” and sweeps through Jiangdong on two fronts, incorporating Wu’s navy. He then leads a multiethnic coalition in a three-pronged invasion of Wei, defeats Sima Yi’s main force in a decisive battle at Chang’an, and breaks the resistance of the Cao Wei aristocracy, ultimately helping Liu Shan restore the Han dynasty and unite the realm.

Drawing on historical sources such as Records of the Three Kingdoms and the Chronicles of Huayang, while also weaving in an alternate-history vision, this story takes Zhuge Liang as its heart and charts a history transformed by the courage to abandon the beaten path and face danger. From a corner of the southwest to a new Han dynasty whose borders stretch from the East China Sea to the Western Regions and from the South China Sea to the Great Wall, it follows a great statesman whose strategic brilliance saves Shu Han from its swift historical demise and lays the foundations for a golden age of unity among many peoples.
