The Liaodong Dragon: Gongsun Du Founds a Kingdom in the Three Kingdoms

At the end of the Eastern Han dynasty, the Yellow Turbans swept across the land, Dong Zhuo plunged the capital into chaos, and the Central Plains became mired in a war among rival warlords. Cao Cao held the Son of Heaven hostage to command the warlords, Yuan Shao commanded a powerful army in Hebei, Liu Bei remained dependent on others while holding fast to his ambition to restore the Han, and Sun Quan inherited his father and brother’s lands to rule Jiangdong. While the world’s attention focused on the struggle for supremacy in the Central Plains, an unexpected power quietly rose in Liaodong Commandery, in what is now eastern Liaoning. The newly appointed governor, Gongsun Du, started out weak, arriving with only a single carriage. He subdued the local strongmen with a cold blade and secured his foundations by establishing farming settlements, planting the seeds of a transformation that would reshape the Three Kingdoms amid the frozen earth and grasslands of Northeast Asia.

He understood the art of survival in keeping a low profile. First, he allied with Gongsun Zan to create a buffer and keep Yuan Shao out of Youzhou. Then he marched north, defeating the Yilou, bringing the Xianbei under his control, and subduing the Wuhuan. He incorporated the lands north and south of the desert into his territory and forged a battle-hardened force of fifty thousand “Desert Cavalry.” When the Battle of Guandu broke out, he seized Bingzhou, swallowed up Jizhou, and conquered Yanzhou in a lightning campaign, crushing the remnants of Yuan and Cao and unifying the north. At last, he used the strength of the north to campaign south. He took Jingzhou without a fight, followed the river to pacify Yizhou, and conquered Jiangdong by land and water. He even expanded into the Western Regions and opened routes overseas, reforging the divided realm under the banner of the Great Liao.

This is not the traditional Three Kingdoms story of Cao, Liu, and Sun, but Gongsun Du’s “upset struggle for supremacy.” From a local governor in a corner of Liaodong to the founding emperor who ended the age of chaos, he used the strategic wisdom of “building strength through northern expansion, seizing opportunities amid disorder, and crushing the weak with superior force” to forge a very different path to unification amid the fires of the late Han dynasty. For the first time, the grasslands and frozen earth of Northeast Asia, along with the fertile fields and rivers of the Central Plains, were truly united in one powerful empire.
