Reborn: From Minor Atletico Shareholder to a Two-Trophy Empire

In Madrid in 2015, Lin Chen wakes up in an unfamiliar office after a shareholders’ meeting. He has been reborn as a small shareholder with a 3% stake in Atletico Madrid. He has just $20 million in his pocket, but his mind holds the rise and fall of the football world over the next decade. His goal is clear and audacious: Gain controlling ownership of Arsenal before 2020, then take charge of Atletico Madrid and build a football empire spanning La Liga and the Premier League.

The $20 million he starts with isn’t gambling money. It’s the key to breaking the deadlock. Rather than blindly throwing money around, he profits from arbitrage on European Championship sponsorships to earn his first fortune, secures a share of the rights to the then-unknown Felix, and quietly lays the groundwork for a “pragmatic faction” in Atletico’s management, sidestepping the future FFP crisis. When Arsenal falls into Kroenke’s “penny-pinching trap,” he exploits Wenger’s dissatisfaction to divide the management, joins forces with Usmanov to leverage the shares, and brings in Qatari funds to fill the financing gap. In the end, he takes control of Arsenal a year ahead of schedule, with a 67% stake.

After taking control of the Gunners, he keeps his promise to Arteta, giving him a hundred-million-euro budget to sign Haaland. Then he uses Atletico’s FFP crisis to exchange loans for shares, gradually bringing the club’s shareholders’ alliance under his control. With both clubs in hand, he builds an integrated youth academy combining “Atletico’s grit and Arsenal’s possession football,” expands into Asia, North America, and the Middle East, and brings the clubs’ combined commercial revenue into the top three in football. He also leads both teams to La Liga, Premier League, and Champions League titles.

Just as the legend of the “two-club kingpin” spreads across the football world, a 5-billion offer from a Saudi consortium, a managerial vacancy after Simeone’s retirement, and plans to expand into the African market all arrive in quick succession. Lin Chen’s road to building a football empire always has another, even greater challenge waiting…
