The 1996 Celtics Dynasty: A Reign of Power

In 1995, the Boston Celtics were trapped in a double crisis: a dismal 35–47 record and infighting within the family. Italian-American founder Giuseppe Leonetti held a 62% controlling stake, but the open feuding between his eldest son Tony, who was embezzling advertising rights, and his second son Paul, who was vying for control of the team, had him at his wits’ end. Meanwhile, Vincent Cole, an unassuming deputy head of the technical support department, held only a marginal 3% stake earned through his technical contributions, yet harbored ambitions that could change the team’s fate.

At the time, the NBA was still in the “paper accounting era.” Vincent exploited its loopholes, forging documents to alter advertising contracts and payroll reports, and precisely set the Leonetti family against itself. He made Giuseppe suspect that Tony was siphoning off company assets, spurred Paul to fight for power, then joined forces with minority shareholders to call in debts, pushing the family conflict to a boiling point. In the golden draft season of 1996, he forged broadcast-rights valuations and draft reports, luring the family into selling the core asset of cable broadcast rights for a song. He used the resulting cash flow to bind minority shareholders to his side, bought up family shares at a low price, and finally swallowed the family trust through a debt-to-equity conversion, rising from a 3% stake to a 62% controlling interest.

The story goes beyond business warfare. Once in power, Vincent used the proceeds from the broadcast rights to sign Antoine Walker, paving the way for the Celtics’ return to the playoffs. It captures the “financial opacity” of the 1990s NBA and, through a blend of Italian family intrigue and basketball management, tells the tale of a bloodless but smoke-filled battle for control of the court.
