The Jin Dynasty Rises Again: I Become Huan Wen and Restore the Central Plains

I transmigrate into the Eastern Jin dynasty, just as the devastation of the Yongjia Upheaval still smolders. The Central Plains have fallen to the northern tribes, and the Jin court, huddled in the south, struggles to survive. To my shock, I have become Huan Wen, a historical figure whose record was a mixture of achievement and failure, a man who dreamed of a northern campaign but never fulfilled his ambition. I command a powerful army in Jingzhou and yearn to reclaim our lost lands, yet I am constrained by the great clans and entangled in the court’s treacherous politics.

Knowing how history unfolds, I will never let the Defeat at Fangtou happen again, nor will I let “failure to recover the Central Plains” become my lifelong regret. At court, I use an iron hand to cow the powerful clans and bluster my way through my rivals’ schemes, bringing reforms in Huan Wen’s name. In the military camps, I unite the elite troops of Jingzhou and Xiangzhou, improve weapons and tactics, and recruit fierce refugees, turning the scattered Eastern Jin forces into a pack of wolves and tigers.

Against the armies of Former Qin and Former Yan, I abandon the hesitation of history and advance carefully through three northern campaigns: first taking Guanzhong, then reclaiming the Luo River region, and finally striking straight at Ye, the capital of Yan. At home, aristocrats plot against me and the court ties my hands. Abroad, northern cavalry ravage the land and supplies run short. I use foresight to break deadlocks, political strategy to restore order, and force of arms to overcome every obstacle. Every battle is a thrilling victory, every contest of wits conceals another twist.

From Jingzhou to Luoyang, from the Fei River to Ye, I lead the Jin army through the northern invaders and reclaim lands lost for a hundred years, bringing home the scattered people of the Central Plains. But this is no end: the great clans still hold power, the Jin court’s old ills remain, and the northern tribes still watch us hungrily. I must be more than the hero who reclaims lost territory. I must rebuild the Jin dynasty, break the stranglehold of “the Wang and Ma families ruling together,” and restore the Jin court in the south to its rightful place as ruler of the Central Plains. The revival of the Jin dynasty must be more than empty talk.
