Willow Behind Palace Walls: A Concubine’s Rise to Empress

Shen Qingdai, a draftsman at a modern design institute, dies from overwork and transmigrates into the body of a low-ranking laundry maid in the Dajing imperial palace. From the start, she accidentally barges into the imperial study and disturbs the emperor, but because she happens to resemble the late Princess Zhaoyang, Emperor Xiao Jingyuan transfers her to the Imperial Kitchen. Using her modern knowledge to improve the food, she wins the favor of both the Empress Dowager and the emperor, rising step by step from Talented Lady to Noble Consort. In the inner palace, she faces schemes from the original story’s heroine, Su Qingyao, and the Noble Consort’s harassment, and she is drawn into the Second Prince’s plot to seize power. Framed for the Consort Xian’s miscarriage, then confronted with secrets about Princess Zhaoyang’s death revealed by an old acquaintance, Nanny Zhao, she finds herself at the center of one storm after another. Though Xiao Jingyuan remains haunted by his “first love,” Princess Zhaoyang, he gradually falls for Shen Qingdai as they spend time together. His feelings shift from projecting onto her to treating her with genuine affection, and the two fight side by side amid palace intrigues and court rivalries. Shen Qingdai, once a palace maid who depended on the emperor, grows into a capable leader and the driving force of the inner palace, entrusted with overseeing the imperial mulberry-planting ceremony. After enduring countless trials, the imperial couple finally find a peaceful spring beneath the palace willows, writing a story of a clear-eyed yet all-consuming love in the palace.
