Rust and Stardust: A Fairy Tale for Adults

In the “Old World Ruins,” shrouded in the “Mist of Oblivion,” humans, the Machinekin, and the Plantfolk once fought a hundred-year war over the “Core Energy.” The conflict ended when all three sides signed the “Silent Pact” and sealed away the energy core. A century later, A-Ling, a young scavenger on the edge of the mist, finds a talking rusty gear named Old Cog in a pile of discarded machinery. He accidentally activates a dormant energy fragment, awakening the sealed “Shadow of Wrath,” a monster formed from the hatred left behind by the war. To stop the ruins from falling into destruction once more, A-Ling sets out with Old Cog. Along the way, they meet Qing He, a Plantfolk girl burdened with the secrets of her people, and Yin Suo, a Machinekin general falsely accused of treason. The three form a temporary alliance and transmigrate through fantastical yet dangerous places such as the Whispering Forest, the Gear Desert, and the Floating Ruins, searching for scattered energy fragments to seal away the Shadow of Wrath once again. On their journey, they must not only face the Shadow Beasts hunting them and the covetous schemes of various factions, but also confront their own inner wounds: A-Ling must accept the truth that he is an “orphan of war,” Qing He must break with her people’s ancestral rule against associating with outsiders, and Yin Suo must clear his name and restore the Machinekin’s trust. In the end, the three realize that “peace is never about sealing away hatred, but learning to live alongside pain.” By achieving redemption for the ruins through “understanding” rather than “strength,” they offer adult readers a fantasy adventure about growing up, forgiveness, and hope.
