The Lightwoven Chronicle of Traces

Chemical prodigy Yan Weiming accidentally has a “nano gas sensor” implanted during a laboratory mishap, gaining the ability to detect odor molecules at concentrations as low as one part per trillion. No longer content with the bottles and jars of the lab, he turns this “art of smell” toward mapping the city’s invisible pulse, building a citywide “odor fingerprint database.” After meeting Lin Shutong, a coolheaded and perceptive newcomer to forensic medicine, the two team up to establish an “Odor Forensics Center.” Using rigorous gas chromatography–mass spectrometry alongside Yan Weiming’s unique “nose for clues,” they isolate a crucial laundry detergent ingredient from the scent of coffee and trace a suspect’s movements through a map of cooking-oil fumes. With gas-sensitive materials as their pens and the law as their ruler, they untangle one cold case after another in the bustling city streets, help bring about the passage of the Odor Evidence Act, and quietly create a luminous new blueprint for uncovering the truth and transforming the justice system through invisible traces.
