Strings Resound Against Palace Walls, Locking Down Jinling

In the Shengyuan era of Southern Tang, beneath Jinling’s glittering songs and dances, currents of intrigue swirl. Liu Jingxian, a master pipa player at the Imperial Music Bureau, inherited a rare musical gift from her family, but has no desire to compete for favor. When the Later Zhou’s web of spies quietly closes in, she realizes that even languid melodies can become weapons. Using her family’s secret score, Eighteen Songs of a Nomad Flute, as her foundation, she invents a “musical cipher manual,” turning the five notes of Chinese music into Morse-like code and sending military intelligence through the clamor of the night market. She also joins forces with the mysterious Later Zhou spy Zhongli, using the overtones of bronze bells to create an invisible barrier against eavesdropping. Amid the symphony of power struggles and music, Liu Jingxian navigates the Imperial Music Bureau, the palace, and the streets. From a mere pipa girl, she transforms into a “musical shadow spy” capable of turning the tide of war. In the end, she helps bring about the Wartime Musical Intelligence Secrecy Act, making a thousand years of music into a silent battle song guarding her homeland. This is a story about wisdom, courage, and the power of music. It turns the “beauty trap” on its head, revealing the big picture through the smallest details, as a plucked string shifts the fate of the world.
