The Star Helm Charts the Tides

In the Southern Song port of Quanzhou, Said ibn Adil, son of an Arab maritime merchant, joins the Li family, a prominent seafaring clan, as an uxorilocal son-in-law after a family upheaval. He quickly spots a fatal delay in the balance rudder that Song ships proudly rely on when making high-speed evasive maneuvers to escape pirates. Drawing on his deep expertise in Arab trigonometry, he resolves to improve it. Starting at his father-in-law Li Yan's shipyard, and with the “bookworm” Su Zizhan and Chen Jiulang, a clerk at the Maritime Trade Office, as witnesses, Said uses counting rods and a sand table to run simulations, applying trigonometric functions to unravel the secrets of currents and rudder angles. In the end, he invents the “Universal Balance Rudder.” When the fearsome Black Tide pirates strike again, the new-rudder ships display astonishing maneuverability, not only protecting the merchant fleet but also proving invaluable for tracking pirates. With the support of Zhao Yunming, the Maritime Trade Office's superintendent, Said joins forces with maritime merchants to establish a “Maritime Security Alliance,” sharing routes, star charts, and anti-piracy techniques. By combining the compass principles from Dream Pool Essays with Arab astronomy, he creates a “Celestial Navigation Matrix.” This is a maritime revolution driven by mathematics, and the story of a son-in-law who, through ingenuity and a sense of responsibility, protects the lifeline of trade amid the treacherous waves of the South China Sea and writes his own legend of the stars and the rudder.
