A Letter from the Mountains: Mountain Paths and Dusty Roads

Collected Essays brings together dozens of memories steeped in mountain breezes and the warmth of home. Through Qing Xian's childhood recollections, it strings together the everyday moments of life in the mountains of Yunnan: Father's corn liquor steaming over the stove, Mother's malt candy fragrant with pine needles, and Grandmother scattering corn seeds in the rain, a gesture of reverence for the passing years. In the leaky tile-roofed house, the family holds out basins and buckets to catch the drips, the splashes capturing life's little details. Hide-and-seek in the pitch dark, shrieks by the latrine and scuffles in the haystack preserve the wildness and honesty of those poor days. And there is the bag of corn passed from hand to hand, the compensation for donkey hoofprints, reflecting the bumps and scrapes of neighborly relations, and the warmth all the more solid for it.

There are no sweeping legends here, only the slow turn of the stone mill, the fragrance of firewood smoke, and the marks left by children running barefoot. Every kernel of corn, every drop of liquor, every piece of candy holds the sweat and hopes of mountain folk, and the bitterness and sweetness of the years. When city neon blurs the outlines of childhood, these stories tucked into cracks between roof tiles, donkey hoofprints, and malt syrup will take you back to a time when people made a living with their own hands and traded sincerity for affection. The most moving moments, it turns out, have always grown from the soil, tasted sweet in the heart, and lived on in the warmth passed down through generations.
