The Black-Robed Well

Synopsis of Black-Robed Well

Deep in Yunnan’s Wulong Mountain lies a well that has held generations in its grip of fear. When seven-year-old Mu Jingshan sneaks a drink from it, he sees two black snakes entwined at the bottom. From then on, he is haunted by the curse that anyone who sees them will bring disaster upon themselves. His Third Grandpa’s herd of cattle goes berserk and tramples him to death; the new bride Chuntao loses her mind and then dies suddenly; and a young cowherd dies with blood pouring from all seven orifices. Every strange occurrence points to the Dragon Cave behind the well. Its black coffin, hallucinogenic river, and shadow of a black-robed figure wearing a straw hat seem like an invisible net closing over the entire village.

Years later, Mu Jingshan returns to his hometown with his knowledge of geology, hoping to use science to unravel the “curse.” The water in the Dragon Cave contains hallucinogenic fungi, low-frequency sound waves trigger panic, and the black coffin is an ancient ritual relic... But his father’s trembling medical records, his grandfather’s deathbed secret, and his son’s cry of “Grandpa in black robes” while suffering a nosebleed pull him back into the supernatural fog. Only after joining forces with his childhood friend Shi Gandang and outsider Zhao Bingkun to explore the cave does he discover the truth: what the black coffin holds is not an evil spirit, but the guilt their ancestors never voiced; the shadow in black robes is not a river god, but the reverence passed down through generations. The so-called “curse” is nothing more than a warning that the balance between people and nature has been broken.

The answer has been hidden in the ancestral teaching, “Show reverence, and all will be well,” ever since the day the coffin was dug up during the Republic of China era, the year Ding Sitian died in the Dragon Cave, and the moment Grandpa buried the stone stele. When Mu Jingshan raises a new stele on the dam, and the waters of the Dragon Cave reflect the red camellias, the sound of the water in Wulong Well finally stops sounding like a wail. It is the mountains and waters answering: If you can preserve your reverence, I can protect your peace.

This is not a story about solving a mystery. It is a reconciliation spanning a hundred years.
