Back to 1983: Hunting in the Northeast Mountains

When Cao Yunfei opens his eyes, he is back at a logging camp in Northeast China in 1983.

The regrets of his previous life are vivid: his childhood friend Jin Congqi was left disabled because of him, his mother died young from overwork, and he himself drifted through half his life in a daze.

In this life, he swears to change his fate.

Armed with memories of his rebirth, he starts with the most basic kind of hunting, using a slingshot to track gray squirrels through the frozen wilderness.

Every perfectly intact pelt is a hope of changing his fate.

Behind his father Cao Youcai's beatings lies a profound love, while his mother Li Fengying's tearful eyes hold her eager hopes for him.

When his childhood sweetheart Guan Tongtong unexpectedly wanders into his plans, a farcical fake romance quietly begins...

A vivid portrait of life in Northeast China's forest country during the 1980s: steaming bowls of pork stew, log cabins frosted with ice, and life-or-death contests between hunters and the mountains.

Through Cao Yunfei's journey, we see how a reborn man uses hunting skills to resolve family conflicts and the bounty of the wilderness to change his family's poverty-stricken fate. From slingshots to hunting rifles, from gray squirrels to wild boars, every hunt is an expression of reverence for life, and every catch is a fight against hardship.
