A Complete Guide to Dragon, Dragon, Tiger, and Tiger

Longwen Bianying was a popular primer for children during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It was compiled by Xiao Liangyou in the Ming dynasty and later expanded and revised by Li Huiji and Xu Ying in the Qing dynasty. Its full title is Longwen Bianying, Second Collection. In the title, "Longwen" means a fine horse, while "Bianying" means that it moves as soon as the whip is raised, suggesting that the book helps children learn quickly.

The book is written in four-character rhyming lines, with regular phrasing and harmonious rhythms that make it easy to memorize. Its contents include historical anecdotes, stories about famous figures, myths and legends, and basic knowledge of the natural world. It ranges from the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors to famous figures of the Tang and Song dynasties, and includes classic stories such as "Kuang Heng Chis a Hole in the Wall" and "Che Yin Reads by the Light of Fireflies." It both teaches cultural knowledge and instills moral lessons.

Compared with Three Character Classic and Hundred Family Surnames, it contains a denser collection of allusions and focuses more on building knowledge of history and culture. It served as a bridge in ancient children's education between simple primers and advanced classics. Its concise language and polished parallel phrasing make it both literary and informative. It not only helps children learn characters and sentence structure, but also develops their historical awareness and humanistic sensibilities. Its influence on later elementary education has been profound.
