A Complete Reading of Dream Pool Essays

"Dream Pool Essays" is a collection of notes written late in life by Shen Kuo (1031-1095), a scientist and politician of the Northern Song Dynasty. It takes its name from Dream Pool Garden in Runzhou, present-day Zhenjiang, Jiangsu, where the work was completed.

The book consists of 30 volumes and three parts: "Brush Talks," "Supplementary Brush Talks," and "Further Brush Talks." Its contents span dozens of fields, including astronomy, calendrics, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, medicine, engineering, literature, history, music, and the fine arts. It contains 609 entries, including Shen Kuo's personal experiences and observations, as well as his compilations of earlier achievements.

More than half of the entries concern science and technology, recording many significant discoveries and inventions, such as Bi Sheng's movable-type printing, magnetic declination, improvements to the astronomical instruments known as the armillary sphere and gnomon, and the mathematical methods "gap accumulation" and "circle intersection." British historian of science Joseph Needham hailed the work as a milestone in the history of Chinese science.

Beyond science and technology, the book's accounts of Northern Song politics, military affairs, and social customs also provide valuable source material for the study of Song history. Concise and lively in style, it combines scientific rigor with literary quality and stands as a model of the comprehensive miscellanies of ancient China, reflecting the technological achievements and social life of the Northern Song Dynasty.
