A Comprehensive Guide to Qimen Dunjia

Qimen Dunjia, an ancient Chinese system of divination, is considered the foremost of the Three Great Esoteric Arts, alongside Taiyi and Liu Ren. It is regarded as Daoism's highest form of predictive study and is even celebrated as the "art of emperors."

Rooted in the Eight Trigrams of the Book of Changes, it combines knowledge from numerous fields, including astrology, calendrics, yin and yang, and the Five Elements. Integrating astronomy, calendrics, military science, strategy, and philosophy, it constructs a complex and ingenious mathematical model of time and space. Using symbols such as the Heaven, Earth, Human, and Spirit Plates, the Ten Heavenly Stems, Nine Stars, Eight Gates, and Eight Spirits, it arranges patterns according to solar terms and cyclical stems and branches, revealing ever-changing information and the laws governing how things develop.

Legend has it that the art originated in the time of the Yellow Emperor, when the Nine-Heavens Mysterious Lady taught it to him to help defeat Chiyou. It originally had 4,320 configurations. After being refined by Feng Hou, Jiang Shang, Zhang Liang, and others, it eventually took the form used today: nine Yin Dun configurations and nine Yang Dun configurations, making eighteen in all. Others believe that it gradually took shape as the ancients observed nature and learned through practice over a long period. Its name changed throughout history: during the Zhou and Qin dynasties it was called "Yin Fu," during the Han and Wei it was known as "Liu Jia," and during the Sui, Tang, Song, and Yuan it was called "Dunjia." Only after the Ming and Qing dynasties did it become known collectively as "Qimen Dunjia."

In ancient times, Qimen Dunjia was mainly used in matters of state and military strategy. Figures such as Zhuge Liang, Zhang Liang, and Liu Bowen were all masters of the art, using it to guide warfare and political decisions. Today, it is also applied to business development and market operations, helping people analyze situations, plan comprehensively, seize opportunities, and avoid harm. Although some of its content is shrouded in mystery and its accuracy is difficult to verify, as an inheritance of traditional culture,
