A Complete Reading of the Treatise on Cold Damage

Treatise on Cold Damage is a classic work of traditional Chinese medicine written by Zhang Zhongjing, a physician of the Eastern Han dynasty. Completed around the third century AD, it was China's first clinical text to provide a complete system of medical principles, methods, formulas, and medicines, and is honored as the "ancestor of medical formulas."

The "cold damage" in the title does not refer only to the common cold. It encompasses a range of illnesses caused by external invasion of wind and cold pathogens, including fever, coughing, vomiting, and many other symptoms. Centered on "pattern identification and treatment," the book classifies illnesses according to their symptoms into six types: Taiyang, Yangming, Shaoyang, Taiyin, Shaoyin, and Jueyin. This system is known as "six-channel pattern differentiation." It lays out corresponding treatment principles and formulas for each type.

The text records 397 treatment methods and 113 formulas, such as the "Ephedra Decoction" for treating externally contracted wind and cold, and the "Minor Bupleurum Decoction" for harmonizing the spleen and stomach. These formulas are carefully composed and highly effective, and are still widely used in clinical practice today. Zhang Zhongjing stressed the importance of adapting medicines to changes in a patient's condition and opposed rigid adherence to ancient methods. This practical approach to diagnosis and treatment laid the foundation for clinical diagnosis and treatment in traditional Chinese medicine.

Treatise on Cold Damage is not only essential reading for practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine, but has also profoundly influenced the development of medicine in later generations. The system of pattern identification and treatment it established became an important mark distinguishing traditional Chinese medicine from other forms of medicine, and it continues to shine with the light of wisdom to this day.
