A Complete Reading of On the Evolution of Heaven

Evolution and Ethics is an important work translated by Yan Fu, a modern Chinese thinker. Its original author was the British biologist Thomas Huxley, and the title should be translated literally as Evolution and Ethics.

Yan Fu completed the translation in the late nineteenth century, creatively adapting the original to reflect the social conditions of China at the time. Its central ideas came from Charles Darwin's theory of biological evolution, putting forward the important principle of "the struggle for existence and the survival of the fittest": in nature, living things survive through competition, and those able to adapt to their environment endure. The same principle applies to human society.

What makes this book distinctive is that it is not simply a work of science. Yan Fu used Western evolutionary thought to awaken his fellow countrymen to the dangers facing them, making it an enlightening work. China was then in dire straits, surrounded by foreign powers. The spread of Evolution and Ethics brought the idea of "reform to preserve the nation" deep into people's hearts, telling them that only by proactively changing and adapting to the times could they avoid being eliminated.

Though its language has a somewhat classical flavor, it is more accessible than traditional classics. It quickly caused a sensation among the educated, became an intellectual weapon for the reform movement, and profoundly influenced the liberation of thought and social change in modern China. It is an important text for understanding the modern Chinese movement to save the nation from extinction.
