A Solitary Farewell

In the Xuantong era of the late Qing Dynasty, the Chuntai opera troupe in Jiangnan established the first school for female performers, breaking with a century-old tradition of the pear garden. When martial-role performer Ling Yunzhi first saw the lead actress Shen Yuzheng, her long water sleeves swirling, it felt like fate had laid a snare for him. He sent his feelings through his folding fan, and she answered with songs on her strings. Their hearts quietly entwined to the beat of drums and gongs. But an imperial decree summoned the troupe to the Forbidden City, where the emperor himself fell at first sight for Ling Yunzhi, who was dressed as a woman. A sudden upheaval in the palace separated the lovers. Yuzheng was cast out among the common people, her youthful hair turning gray as she studied the pipa under a master, each note recounting a life of hardship. Yunzhi was trapped behind palace walls, performing for the emperor day after day, with an unsent letter hidden in his flowing sleeves. When the pipa melodies of Jiangnan meet the court’s rainbow-feather dances, what lonely lament will this romance, born from a dream onstage, compose amid the tides of the age?
