Specimen No. 734

Lin Wei, the youngest doctoral student in Yanda University’s biology department, once believed that becoming the favored student of academic luminary Gu Yanqing was the crowning glory of her scholarly career. Then she discovered that the lab journals labeled “White Mouse No. 734” recorded her own genetic sequence and behavioral patterns. She had gone from disciple to her mentor’s live experimental subject. Nearly sixty-year-old Gu Yanqing imprisoned her in a suburban villa, conducting experiments on her nerves and memories in the name of “scientific research” and threatening her parents’ safety to force her compliance. During the days and nights she spent bound to a cold operating table, Lin Wei found a gap in the ventilation duct. A strand of metal wire, hidden away to send a distress signal, became her only hope. When a lost delivery worker picked up a scrap of paper that had drifted down, and Gu Yanqing’s experiments were about to enter their most dangerous stage, this imprisonment carried out in the name of love and scholarship was bound to end in bloodshed, as the truth came out and resistance began. Sample No. 734 was never just data to be manipulated at will, but a soul yearning for freedom.
