Pine Soot Locks the Ribbon, Starlight Falls into the Inkstone

When art student Su Wanqing met Fu Yanshen in the studio of an old Republican-era mansion, paint was streaming down the wooden staircase. At sixty, he was a legend in the art world and the man who held her captive in a world of light and shadow. Amid the scent of turpentine and sandalwood lurked his obsession with his deceased daughter, and Su’s helpless descent into ruin. Locked doors, black velvet curtains, and white dresses that always fit perfectly formed her cage. Yet on the pages of her sketchbook, late at night, wolf and fawn blurred together in an entanglement. Meanwhile, Lin Xixia, a post-00s fan, clutched a homemade cassette tape when she ran into her idol, Cheng Yian, backstage at a concert. The eleven-year age gap quietly narrowed in the mint-scented evening breeze: goodnight messages on a pager, guitar music beneath a banyan tree, and a Walkman engraved with their names let forbidden feelings grow wild beneath the neon lights. It was only when she played her rearrangement of “Boundless Oceans, Vast Skies” beneath the Hong Kong night sky that she understood: sometimes freedom means having someone shield you from the storm. The two stories are like twin reflections in a mirror. One shows confinement stained with pine soot, the other a release beneath falling starlight. Within the chasm carved by their age difference lies the same raging tide: possession and letting go, stand-ins and selfhood, and all the unspoken feelings that surge like a tide called longing.
