The Story of Yongzhi tells the extraordinary life of Yongzhi, the fourth daughter of the Qianlong Emperor and Consort Ling, a princess cherished by everyone around her.
Yongzhi is no fragile, ordinary princess. She excels at music, chess, calligraphy, and painting, and her skills at riding and archery rival those of any man. The one thing she cannot do is make pastries, a charming contrast that makes her feel all the more real. At court, she forms a close friendship with Xiao Yanzi and Ziwei, sharing many adventures and weathering plenty of upheavals together.
When she meets Xiao Jian, a wandering swordsman burdened by a family vendetta, Yongzhi’s heart begins to stir. Xiao Jian goes from quietly watching over her to confessing his deep feelings, and their love is tested by their different backgrounds and the many obstacles in their way. Along the way, Yongzhi witnesses the devoted love between Hanxiang and Mengdan and helps stage Hanxiang’s fake death so she can escape the palace. She also endures a flight from court sparked by political rivalries, as well as life-and-death trials, including losing her sight.
On the run, everyone supports one another, and Yongzhi and Xiao Jian’s love grows ever stronger. At last, misunderstandings are cleared up and the group returns to the palace. With her wisdom and kindness, Yongzhi resolves the crisis, pleads for the Empress, and brings about the marriage of Yongqi and Xiao Yanzi. She, too, finds happiness: after a grand wedding, she and Xiao Jian build a life full of love and warmth, moving between the palace and the world of martial arts as they write a legendary story of their own.
