Understanding the Unity of Heaven and Humanity: Reverence and Self-Conduct

This final book, Understanding the Unity of Heaven and Humanity: Reverence and Living at Peace with Yourself, feels more like the end of a journey into understanding people. While writing it, I often sat in the courtyard watching the clouds, the trees, and ants carrying things home. It suddenly dawned on me that the unity of heaven and humanity isn’t some abstruse principle. It’s hidden in everyday life: sunflowers always turn toward the sun, not to curry favor but to follow their nature; an old carpenter always works with the grain of the wood, not out of compromise but out of respect. In the book, there’s a village rebuilding its home after an earthquake. The villagers don’t complain about fate; they plant crops among the ruins. “As long as the land remains and the people remain, there is hope,” they say. That made me understand that reverence isn’t fear. It means knowing that some laws cannot be forced. Living at peace with yourself isn’t loneliness; it means being able to get along with yourself through both good times and bad.

A reader once asked why a book about understanding people should discuss “the unity of heaven and humanity.” The truth is, after reading these ten books, you’ll see that understanding others ultimately helps you understand yourself better: knowing your own kindness means avoiding harm from evil; knowing your boundaries means drawing a clear line between yourself and the unworthy; knowing how small you are means respecting the laws of heaven and earth. It’s like a mountain climber who reaches the summit and realizes that the person they most needed to understand wasn’t the distant scenery, but the self who wanted to give up halfway up the mountain. This book has fewer techniques and more reflections, because in the end you’ll understand that the best way to understand people is to see the world clearly and still keep your own rhythm.
