Know People, See Clearly: Learn to Get Along with Ease

When you read about the Perfected Ones, you might feel they have little to do with you. After all, every day we face pressure at work, complicated relationships, and the trivialities of life. It’s hard to remain “spotless.” But think about it: their clarity of mind wasn’t something they were born with. They cultivated it over time, after weathering life’s trials. They, too, once held grudges, until they realized that the more you fixate on things, the more you lose. They, too, once clung to things, until they understood that the tighter you hold on, the deeper the pain. They, too, once felt resentment, until they learned that the longer it lasts, the more deeply it wounds you. Like a stone smoothed by running water, they began with sharp edges, but after being washed over by the waves of life, gradually became gentle and rounded. They haven’t lost their true nature; they’ve simply worn down their sharpest edges, allowing the light within to shine through more easily.

The Perfected Ones in this book may not have accomplished anything earth-shattering. Most are ordinary people who have found clarity in everyday life: the market vendor who always adds an extra handful of scallions for customers, not to drum up business, but because “a little more makes everyone happy”; the elderly neighbor who always accepts packages for others in the complex, not because there’s nothing else to do, but because “everyone has a time when they need a hand”; the colleague who could take credit at work but chooses to step aside, not out of weakness, but because “getting the job done matters more than who gets the credit.” Their clarity is hidden in these little things: they don’t place too much importance on gain, don’t dwell on what they win or lose, and don’t think of themselves as anything special.
