Echoes on the Wind

Lin Yan can feel the lingering warmth of the dead at her fingertips. The “echoes” sealed inside their belongings take many forms: golden warmth of affection, gray-blue guilt, or resolve as searing as red-hot iron filings. For ten years, she has sorted these emotions away like specimens, refusing to face the “suicide” of her older sister, Lin Tang, until a charred music box caught her eye. The moment she touched its dial, glowing red particles burned through her fingertips, revealing Lin Tang’s scalded wrist and the warm words she had hidden: “Don’t touch it. It’s hot.” Then the mysterious Lu Ze appeared, bringing with him a scarf from a car accident, a withered maple leaf, and a fountain pen sent in for repairs. Within the ice-shard echoes, Lin Tang’s unfinished words, “Lu Ze, you can’t…” and the scent of disinfectant on Lu Ze’s cuffs wove a web pointing toward the truth. A ceramic ornament belonging to the old police officer Chen Mo held a silent echo. Su Wan’s deaf left ear could pick up noise, and the shadows of Stardust Corporation began to emerge. When the fragments finally came together, Lin Yan realized that her sister’s silhouette rushing toward the flames had been shielding her from the alcohol lamp she had knocked over. The words “I don’t blame you,” spoken through the door, had been softened so as not to wake her. Even the iodine scent that always clung to Lu Ze came from the traces left behind when he hid medicine for Lin Tang. She had read the deepest affections in the world, yet it took her ten years to understand the tenderness that pierced through time, hidden in the silence of Lin Tang’s final words. Those cold gestures she had misread were all sugar wrapped in thorns. When the wind brushed past the windowsill, she finally caught it: the echo she had been afraid to touch ten years ago, slipping gently into her heart along the burn mark in her palm.
