Red and Blue Rebuild: Starting with Messi’s Departure

The cheers at Camp Nou had barely faded from the footage of Messi tearfully saying goodbye when Lin Feng transmigrated into the role of Barcelona’s new sporting director. What awaited him was a mess more glaring than any spreadsheet: with Messi gone, the attack had collapsed, the locker room was filled with despair and doubt, the board was waving a deficit report and demanding he “stop the bleeding within three months,” and die-hard fans were surrounding his office with signs reading “Get out of Barca.”

On Xavi’s tactics board, possession football was no longer dogma. Ter Stegen’s long balls launched attacks, De Jong’s passes out wide were as precise as a scalpel, Bellingham’s late runs tore open defenses, and Lewandowski’s poaching combined with Gavi’s liveliness to create remarkable chemistry.
