Synopsis

【Wuxia chivalry + the nation in peril + torn between loyalty and righteousness + a tragic song of a turbulent age】The first volume of The Record of the Wilds, winner of the Best Long-Form Book Award at Legends Ancient and Modern, is set amid the Song-Jin wars and paints a vivid portrait of ordinary people caught up in the tides of history. It captures the essence of classical storytelling without sacrificing dramatic force: the wandering swordsman Yan Sheng rescues a secret envoy and obtains a jade box, only to be framed by Prince Kang as a Jin spy. With nowhere left to turn, he is saved by a band of strangers from the outlaw world and narrowly escapes death. He later disguises himself as a Jin soldier to rob the annual tribute, outwits and kills a traitorous strongman in the Taihang Mountains, and witnesses bloodshed and grief in Bozhou and the rise of the Dragon on Dongting Lake. Along the way, he meets Yue Fei, comes to know Zong Ze, and saves Qing'er. Amid the flames of the resistance against Jin, affection quietly takes root. What passions collide between Zhong Xiang and his followers, who dream of “land for all,” and Yue Fei, who hopes to “reform abuses through war”? Brotherhood among the jianghu, the smoke of battle, and nascent romance intertwine in a time of chaos. More than a tale of clashing swords and armored horses, this is an epic of ordinary people seeking “fate” and “redemption” across the wilds of history. It vividly portrays the sharp conflicts inherent in a particular social structure, focusing on the inner turmoil and struggles of people swept along by the currents of their age, and their tragic quest to find peace of soul and redeem themselves amid the extremity of blood and fire. The waves of the eight-hundred-li-wide Dongting Lake are silently gathering strength for the next storm…
