The Canglan Dynasty: A Long Tale of Political Intrigue

Throughout the history of the Canglan Dynasty, the struggle for power has never abated. As the ailing old emperor, Xiao Zhengxuan, lies on his deathbed, his nine princes prowl the court like tigers in wait, stirring up a storm. The eldest legitimate son, Xiao Yi, commands the Imperial Guards and forges suits of black iron armor. The third prince, Xiao Jin, controls the grain transport routes and monopolizes the wealth of Jiangnan. The fifth prince, Xiao Heng, uses campaigns against bandits to expand the northwestern frontier army. The eighth prince, Xiao Yu, keeps a band of assassins and has woven a vast intelligence network through the Dark Phoenix Pavilion. The sudden death of the seventh prince, Xiao Chen, ignites the succession struggle. At a bloody banquet in the Taiji Gate, the third prince, Xiao Jin, steps over his brothers’ corpses to claim the throne.

Yet the new emperor’s purge brings no lasting peace. His decision to divide the empire into fiefdoms allows the regional princes to build up their strength along the borders. Xiao Jin’s forced Equal Fields Decree and his wrongful execution of a worthy general hasten the dynasty’s decline. After the young ruler, Xiao Chengjun, takes the throne, the relatives of the empress seize power and the regional princes rebel in turn. Three armies, led by Xiao Yu, Prince of the Northern Frontier; Xiao Yan, Prince of Xiping; and Xiao Yu, Prince of Nanjun, march on the imperial capital, plunging the court into an even greater conflict.

In this age of fierce rivalry, warlords stop at nothing to seize the realm. Xiao Yan eventually emerges victorious. He reforms the old system, purges corrupt officials, and ushers in the prosperous Kaitai era. But the story does not end there. When the imperial guards uncover traces of Xiao Yu’s young son, a new struggle for power quietly begins. Dynastic change, brothers killing brothers, and rulers and ministers locked in political games: The Canglan Dynasty: A Saga of Political Intrigue paints a sweeping and gripping portrait of power struggles in a feudal empire, showing how human beings struggle and fall under the lure of power, and how history seals the rise and fall of dynasties.
