The Mongol Empire’s Road to the West

The Mongol Empire’s Western Campaigns: Conquests That Reshaped the World

With a sweeping perspective and rich detail, The Mongol Empire’s Western Campaigns recounts the tumultuous history of the empire’s three great western expeditions in the 13th century. These campaigns were not only monumental military conquests, but also profoundly altered the political, economic, and cultural landscape of Eurasia.

The first expedition began in 1219, sparked by the Otrar Incident, in which Khwarazm killed a Mongol trade caravan and its envoys. Genghis Khan personally led the army, dividing it into four routes. Chagatai and Ogedei besieged Otrar, capturing it after five months. Jochi marched down the Syr Darya and took several cities. Alaq Noyan and others seized the upper Syr Darya and the Fergana region. Genghis Khan and Tolui headed straight for Transoxiana to attack Bukhara. Using their cavalry’s mobility, their archery advantage, and siege weapons such as trebuchets, the Mongols captured Samarkand, the capital of Khwarazm, in 1220. Shah Muhammad fled and later died of illness. The Mongol army continued its pursuit, sweeping across the Kipchak steppe, southern Russia, and Ukraine before returning to Mongolia in 1225. This expedition extended Mongol influence into Central Asia and parts of Eastern Europe.

The second expedition, known as the “Campaign of the Eldest Sons,” took place from 1235 to 1242. To expand the empire, Ogedei Khan summoned a council of princes, which decided to launch the campaign under Batu’s command. After destroying Volga Bulgaria and conquering the Kipchaks, the army advanced into Rus’, capturing cities including Moscow and Kiev. In 1241, the Mongols crushed the Polish-German forces in Silesia, then split up and invaded Poland and Hungary, defeating the Hungarians at the Sajó River.
