A Summary of World War I and World War II

The Two World Wars: Catastrophe and the Remaking of Human Civilization

In the first half of the twentieth century, humanity experienced two world wars of unprecedented scale. These conflicts not only reshaped the global political landscape, but also left lessons written in blood and fire that profoundly influenced later generations' understanding of peace.

I. The Causes and Nature of the Wars

World War I (1914–1918) stemmed from imperial powers competing for colonies and resources. Uneven economic and political development under capitalism intensified tensions between Britain and Germany and aggravated territorial disputes between France and Germany. The Sarajevo Incident ultimately triggered a full-scale war. At its core, the conflict was an unjust war of plunder waged by imperialist nations to repartition the world.

World War II (1939–1945) was the culmination of unresolved tensions left by World War I. The harsh penalties imposed on Germany by the Treaty of Versailles, the shock of the 1929 economic crisis, and the rise of fascism drove Germany, Italy, and Japan to shift their crises onto others through military expansion. The indulgence of British and French appeasement and the failure of international coordination mechanisms ultimately dragged the world into a just war against fascism.

In the early stages of World War I, the Central Powers and the Entente Powers fought trench warfare on the Western Front. The Battles of Verdun and the Somme became grinding battles of attrition, earning the name “meat grinders.” After the United States entered the war, the Entente turned the tide, and Germany surrendered in 1918. Although the postwar Treaty of Versailles system temporarily stabilized Europe, it sowed the seeds of revenge.

World War II began with Germany's invasion of Poland and quickly swept across Europe. The outbreak of the German-Soviet War and the Pacific War made the conflict global. The Battle of Stalingrad
