Fourteen-year-old Xiaofeng is a student at Sunshine Middle School with a dream of playing table tennis, but his family’s poverty stands in the way. His parents make a living selling vegetables at the market and simply cannot afford professional training for him. Still, his love of table tennis never lets him give up.
After school, Xiaofeng often practices alone in a dilapidated gym, hitting the ball against a wall. He teaches himself by watching match videos online, copying the techniques and movements of top players, and quietly improving through sheer grit and hard work.
When the school announces a table tennis tournament whose champion will represent it at the district competition, Xiaofeng is full of hope. But his name is missing from the sign-up list. The PE teacher thinks that since he has never had formal training, letting him compete would be a waste of a spot. Unwilling to accept this, Xiaofeng summons the courage to plead his case. The teacher finally agrees: if Xiaofeng can beat Li Ming, the seeded player on the school team, he will be allowed to compete.
On the day of the match, Xiaofeng faces Li Ming, a formidable player who has placed in city competitions. Things go badly from the start, and Xiaofeng loses the first game. But he quickly adjusts, gradually taking control of the match with the skills he has honed and his unyielding determination. At the crucial moment in the deciding game, with the score tied at 10–10, Xiaofeng stays calm and lands a decisive shot in one fluid motion. He pulls off an upset and wins his chance to compete.
Xiaofeng does not win the district tournament, but his fighting spirit earns everyone’s respect and catches the eye of a provincial team coach. Seeing his potential, the coach offers him a place on the team. And so Xiaofeng’s journey toward his table tennis dream officially begins anew.
