In Qingping Village, life is as calm and uneventful as the water in the old well at the village entrance. After school, the children either help with chores at home or run wild along the field paths. Soccer is a distant, unfamiliar thing to them.
Then Teacher Lin arrives at Qingping Village Primary School with a battered soccer ball, and everything begins to change. One Saturday afternoon, Teacher Lin kicks the ball across the schoolyard’s uneven dirt ground, and it bounces right into the children’s hearts. Xiaohu is the first to rush forward and give it a try, only to fall face-first into the mud, making everyone laugh. An impromptu, rule-free “match” begins. From then on, soccer becomes part of the children’s lives. They use stones and branches to make goalposts and delight in the game. Xiaohu stands out for his speed and explosive power, often practicing his shots alone at dusk.
But the adults in the village don’t understand their passion. They say soccer won’t put food on the table and only gets in the way of farm work. Xiaohu is often scolded by his father, but his enthusiasm for soccer never wanes. A turning point comes when the county holds a soccer tournament for primary school students. Teacher Lin decides to take the team, stirring up a commotion in the village as the adults voice their doubts. The children don’t back down, though, and train hard under Teacher Lin’s guidance.
On the day of the tournament, the children from Qingping Village Primary School, dressed in worn-out clothes, stand on a beautiful soccer field, a stark contrast to the students from the well-equipped city school. Early in the match, their opponents score goal after goal with their polished skills and seamless teamwork. The children from Qingping Village panic, but Xiaohu encourages them to rally.
