A Comprehensive Reader of Wang Fuzhi's On the Song Dynasty

On Song is a historical and political work by Wang Fuzhi, a thinker of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. Focusing on the history of the Song dynasty, it uses historical events to explain political views and philosophical ideas, offering considerable depth and insight.

In the book, Wang Fuzhi begins with Song Taizu Zhao Kuangyin's founding of the dynasty after the Chenqiao Mutiny, then examines major events and key figures from each period of the Northern and Southern Song. His discussion of Wang Anshi's reforms is particularly incisive: he acknowledges their original aim of enriching the country and strengthening its military, while pointing out that poor appointments and excessive haste in their implementation caused a host of problems. In doing so, he reveals the complex relationship between reform and stability.

In its intellectual outlook, On Song reflects Wang Fuzhi's commitment to applying learning to practical affairs, as he sharply assesses the successes and failures of Song politics. He argues that rulers should cultivate virtue, exercise caution in punishment, and appoint capable people to positions of responsibility. He criticizes certain failings of Song autocracy, such as excessive centralization that weakened local vitality. He also reflects deeply on the Song policy of favoring civil officials over military ones, pointing out the resulting military vulnerabilities. These discussions reveal his profound thinking on the balance of power and the relationship between civil and military affairs in the system of national governance.

On Song is not merely a list of historical facts. Through a detailed examination of more than 300 years of Song history, it draws lessons from the past to offer later generations a wealth of insight into governing a country and understanding the patterns of social development. An important classic for the study of Song history and ancient political thought, it inspires readers to learn from the rise and fall of dynasties and reflect on the future of the state and society.
