Lonely Shadows of the Past: A Deadly Secret in Republican-Era China

On a winter night in Huaicheng, the cold was like a silent knife. Once it had cut through the darkness, only scattered lights and blade-sharp winds remained. This place had once been a bustling trading port, but now war and political turmoil had thrown it into chaos. From a distant alley came the cold scent of Chinese medicine, tinged with a hard-to-place smell of blood. The clinic at the end of the alley was called the Poison Haven. It was an unremarkable little building, its sign faded until the three characters could only be made out from close up. The neighbors steered clear of the clinic, though none dared discuss it aloud. Its owner, Song Linchuan, was an out-and-out eccentric. Song Linchuan was nearly thirty. His face was pale, but his eyes always held a keen intelligence that sent a chill through anyone who met his gaze. His medical skills were superb. Whether faced with a rare illness or the backlash of poison, he could always find a way to save his patients. Yet it was said that everyone he saved would, afterward, inexplicably develop an irrepressible dependence on him, as if an invisible thread had bound their fate to his. The night was deep, but a dim oil lamp glowed inside the clinic. Song Linchuan sat at a table, where an intricately marked map lay open. Beside it sat a small blue-and-white porcelain jar containing the potent poison powder he had just prepared. It gave off an eerie pale blue glow. He lightly tapped the map with his fingertips, the corners of his mouth turning up as if he were plotting a game of chess that could change the balance of power.
