Mystery and Crime in the Fog of Republican-Era Chongqing

Autumn, 1941. Chongqing. Vapor rose from the river, and the morning mist draped over the mountain city like a veil. The distant mountains appeared and disappeared, as though glimpsed from another world. This city, known as the “Fog Capital,” was the wartime political center and a vortex where fates converged. A small boat docked, carrying refugees, merchants, and soldiers from all over. Li Huaming was among them. Wearing a dark gray changshan and carrying a somewhat battered suitcase, he silently pushed his way through the crowded throng. His gaze swept across his surroundings as if searching for something, then settled on a small teahouse at the far end of the pier. A sign above the teahouse entrance read “Yixin Pavilion.” This was the destination of Li Huaming's journey. According to his tip, the teahouse was a secret hideout in Chongqing's underground intelligence network. Wartime Chongqing was a city of both prosperity and upheaval. Beneath its calm surface, undercurrents surged: political maneuvering, espionage, and commercial rivalries wove together into a complex picture. And now, a mysterious and brutal case was quietly beginning to unfold. After taking a seat, Li Huaming ordered jasmine tea. In a low voice, he asked the tea server, “I hear there's been something unsettling happening around here lately?” The tea server's hand paused as he poured. He glanced up at Li Huaming, then quickly lowered his head again. “What would you like to hear, sir?”
