A Nightmare of Mist and Mystery in Shanghai

Shanghai, autumn 1933. Dusk was falling. The damp breeze off the Huangpu River swept over the Bund, and the flagstone road along the river glimmered faintly beneath the streetlights. This city, where countless histories and dreams collided, was a breeding ground for schemes and desire, a stage for the clash between crime and justice. Amid its glittering, bewildering streets lay countless secrets no one knew. Zhu Kaiwen, one of Shanghai’s finest private detectives, stood that night in front of a mansion shrouded in dense fog. Once the residence of a wealthy merchant, it had now become the starting point of an unsolved mystery. Dressed in a black changshan, he gazed at the mansion’s entrance through the fog, his features sharp and his eyes deep-set. An urgent call from the police station echoed in his mind. “Mr. Zhu, we have another case that needs your attention. Song Zhilin, the former business magnate you know, has reported his wife missing. She left behind a letter in a hurried, scrawling hand. Most of it is unclear, but one line sends a chill down the spine: ‘If you find this letter, please believe me and uncover the truth.’”
