A Silent Rainy Night on the Shanghai Bund

Shanghai, 1936, the twenty-fifth year of the Republic of China. This great metropolis of the East was steeped in an atmosphere where glittering nightlife mingled with oppressive anxiety. Neon lights shimmered along the Bund, jazz echoed through cafés in the French Concession, and in the dark alleys, whispered deals and lurking dangers abounded. Newsboys on every street corner cried out in their young voices, “Tensions are rising! Japanese troops are massing! A storm is about to break over Shanghai!” On a rainy night, silence settled over the docks along the Huangpu River, and the river breeze carried the damp air. A figure in a black raincoat stood by the water, gazing at the scattered lights of boats on the river. Suddenly, footsteps came closer, quickening with every step. The figure whirled around, straight into the gleam of a razor-sharp dagger. “Tell me, where did you hide it?” the newcomer threatened in a low voice, eyes sharp as knives. “Heh…” The man in the black raincoat sneered. “Of course I don’t have it. You’re all moving too slowly.” Before he could finish speaking, a muffled groan rang out. The man crumpled to the ground, a dagger buried in his chest, blood mingling with the rainwater as it spread across the pavement. “Useless fool,” the killer muttered, then quickly vanished into the rainy night. In the puddle beside the body, a strange symbol came clearly into view: a lotus-like design surrounded by densely carved characters, seemingly some kind of code.
